The Southern Marin Fire District is an independent special district established by the Marin County Board of Supervisors in July of 1999. The District was formed by the merger of the Alto-Richardson Fire Protection District and The Tamalpais Fire Protection District. The Fire District serves the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry and approximately 1/3 of the town of Tiburon. The District covers 9.5 square miles, a population of approximately 20,500 and over 8,000 homes and commercial properties. The District has 37 full time employees including a chief, a deputy chief, 3 battalion chiefs, 6 captains, 24 firefighters/engineers (9 of whom are also paramedics) and 2 administrative secretaries. The District also maintains a staff of 12 volunteer firefighters. In addition to providing fire suppression and prevention, the District also provides paramedic and ambulance service and many other vital services.
