San Rafael and Marinwood Contract

San Rafael council approves fire contract with Marinwood

The San Rafael City Council voted Monday night to approve a three-year agreement that will preserve joint fire service with the Marinwood Fire Department.
The Marinwood Community Services District approved the deal last week.

San Rafael will pay Marinwood $225,000 for 2006-07, $250,000 for 2007-08 and $275,000 for 2008-09. The payments are less than the $390,000 San Rafael paid before, but an increase over the $150,000 it paid this year.

Marinwood and San Rafael have shared fire services since 1973, an arrangement that allowed San Rafael to save money by closing a fire station and provided Marinwood with dispatch and training services. But San Rafael officials had threatened to sever ties in light of budget problems.

San Rafael cut its annual payment to $150,000, despite complaints from Marinwood officials that more than 50 percent of their calls were in San Rafael.

San Rafael voters have since approved a sales tax increase to help pay for the service.
