Brush fire scorches two acres in San Rafael
A two-acre brush fire in an industrial area of San Rafael was quickly contained Wednesday as officials - citing high fire danger - kept a vigilant watch countywide.
San Rafael fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Buscher said four-wheel-drive fire engines from Marinwood and Marin County fire departments helped crews contain the blaze at Kerner Boulevard and Irene Street before any structures were threatened.
"We got here pretty quickly and were able to stop the progress of the fire," Buscher said. "It was extremely helpful to have those engines help us out. Because of the wind direction and the grass, the fire was a big concern. But we were lucky the ground was flat and we were able to get at and keep it from spreading."
More than 20 firefighters from San Rafael, Marinwood and the county responded to the 1:27 p.m. blaze. A hand crew from the Mt. Tamalpais fuel management team were called in to put out residual hot spots.
A nearby commercial area was not threatened because vegetation along the fence line had been cut back recently.
Buscher said the cause of the fire was under investigation. Crews planned to keep a close eye on the area overnight watching for flare-ups.
Wednesday's fire occurred amid a red-flag warning, a statement issued by National Weather Service alerting firefighters to high winds and low humidity.
